Mas Gomà, the heart of Penedès since 1724

The first pages of the Mas Gomà manor were written in 1724, its official founding date. Meanwhile, the Vendrell family was working as winemakers in other parts of Penedès. The long winemaking history of the Vendrell family dates back to the sixteenth century. But was not until the nineteenth century when the Vendrell Family arrived to Mas Gomà estate working for Josep Torras i Bages a Catalan thinker, writer and open-minded bishop who defended both social rights and Catalan language in those dark times. Josep Torras i Bages was born in the manor, and from there he started his fervent activity. In 1896 he had been chosen as an honorary member of the “Reial Acadèmia Catalana de Belles Arts de Sant Jordi” and of the “Reial Acadèmia de Bones Lletres de Barcelona” (1898), the Academies of Fine Arts and Letters.

Vendrell family, a viticulture dynasty

In 1916 Josep Torras i Bages passed away and two years later the Vendrell family bought the whole estate. Apart from growing grape vines, in the thirties Joan Vendrell Ràfols with his son Joan Vendrell Via built a cellar next to the Mas Gomà manor to produce wine. New restricted regulations at the beginning of the seventieth turn this project off, but not his love for winemaking.

As in families who cares about heritage and tradition, his son has been named after him and so his grandson: respectively Joan Manel Vendrell Ferret and Joan Vendrell Olivella.

Joan Manel Vendrell Ferret worked at Mas Gomà estate since he was young. He pampered the lush green vineyard and he grew up with the passion for winemaking. He studied enology and since then he started working as a winemaker in some of the top companies of the zone. After 25 years of expertise in winemaking, in 2009 Joan Manel decided to finally dive into his dream of life: produce his own long-aging cavas from Mas Gomà estate, together with his son Joan.As the other family members, Joan also grew up immersed into the viticulture world. Meanwhile, he studied business administration and got specialized in international management. He worked as a product manager in the marketing department of companies as L’Oréal or Rowenta, but he never forgot his roots and his family heritage of winemaking. Now, father and son onboard their project together, with a refreshed view on the sector and all the rigorous and meticulous professionalism of both wine making and business administration, with an healthy sparkle of family care and a “three-generation-dream” to pursue.
